Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Offense took center stage in what was billed as a pitchers dual in Lynn University baseball's 10-7 victory over Eckerd on Friday afternoon. The two teams combined for 17 runs on 27 hits with John Borup going 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and Kyle Schindler logging a 3-for-4 day at the plate and two runs scored. The 19th-ranked Fighting Knights improve to 14-5 overall and 2-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.
All eyes were on two of the top pitchers in the SSC taking the mound in Eckerd's Jimmy Gutowski and Lynn's Max Watt. Watt struggled with command issues in the early goings but settled down to post goose-eggs on the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Gutowski cruised through two innings before the Blue & White bats awoke with a fury and chased him from the game in the middle of the fifth.
A two-out single by Schindler in the third revealed the first kink in Gutowski's armor. Michael Stemle followed by beating out a bunt to shortstop and Borup fought off a 2-2 count by ripping a two-run single through the hole in the left side of the infield, putting Lynn on top 2-0.
Kyle Carter made his debut for the Fighting Knights and did not disappoint, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. His big contribution came in the fourth after Ben Schwanburg walked in a seven-pitch at bat to bring Carter to the plate. The junior designated hitter turned on a full-count fastball from Gutowski, sending the fastball just inside the right-field foul pole for a two-run blast.
Watt ran into trouble in the fifth when a potential double-play ball was booted, putting two Eckerd runners aboard with no outs. Lucas Luope then cleared the bases with a single into right center as a second Lynn gaffe allowed Jake O'Rourke to score from first base. The Tritons (12-7, 3-2 SSC) would score three in the inning. Watt's (5-0) day would end after the frame as he allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Gutowski would not be so lucky to escape the fifth. Borup doubled to start the frame, sending Eckerd's ace to the bench. Reliever Gernder Nutter then allowed an infield single to Thomas Kain and a RBI double to Matt Tietz, increasing Lynn's lead to 5-3. A wild pitch and RBI single from Schwanburg ended Nutter's day and brought about the third Tritons' pitcher of the inning.
Eckerd was able to take advantage of another Lynn error in the sixth, though, to score three runs off reliever Jonathon Wake. Wake was lifted with the bases loaded and two outs as Bill Mendek needed just one pitch to escape the jam by inducing an inning-ending ground ball to short.
Mendek collected his fifth save of the season with 3.1 innings or solid relief. He surrendered one unearned run on three hits with one strikeout.
Lynn added a run in the sixth with a Tietz RBI single and later increased the score to 10-6 in the seventh when Borup drove in two with a double to right center field.
Kain would go 2-for-5 with a pair of infield singles and Tietz was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
