Baseball Loses No-Hit Bid but Still Sweeps Tritons

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's 19thranked baseball team was running on all cylinders in its doubleheader sweep over Eckerd, 4-3 and 18-1, on Saturday afternoon.  The Fighting Knights took all three games in the series with the Tritons to improve to 17-5 overall and 4-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Jimmy O'Neill threw seven no-hit innings in game two, Thomas Kain hit a walk-off double in game one and Kyle Carter picked up his first career win in the matinee before going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and his second home run in as many days.

Game one was a thriller until the end as both Lynn and Eckerd (12-9, 3-4 SSC)  saw leads evaporate within an inning of gaining them.  Taking a tie 3-3 game into the ninth, Albert Lefran drew a pinch hit walk to open the frame but seemed destined to be stranded at second base until Kain drove a two-out, 3-2 fastball down the line for the walk-off extra base hit, giving the Blue & White a 4-3 victory.

The Tritons struck first, getting on top of starter Travis Connolly with a two-run home run from Carter Cashman in the first inning.  Connolly settled down following the rough opening frame before being lifted in the sixth.  He would toss 5.1 innings allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Lynn took advantage of two errors in the second to even the game 2-2 as Matt Ackerman drove in a run and a Ben Schwanburg double-play plated Lynn's second run.  Schwanburg then collected a RBI in the fourth with a single in the fourth but the Tritons squared it up in the sixth with a RBI hit from Cashman.

AJ Falletta entered with the winning run on third and one out but fanned Grant Banko and Matt MacMahon in consecutive at-bats to keep the game tied.  Carter then entered in the seventh and struck out four batters in three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit to collect the win.

Lynn's high-octane offense took flight in game two, scoring runs in seven of the eight frames, including at least two runs in the first six innings.  Alex DeBellis drove in the first run with a RBI single while Carter followed with a two-out, two run single to right field.

Overshadowed a bit by the Fighting Knights non-stop scoring was O'Neill on the mound.  The tall right-hander was incredibly efficient and carried a perfect game into the sixth until a pair of errors gave the Tritons their first baserunners of the second game.

O'Neill tossed only 83 pitches in his seven frames, issuing one walk and fanning three batters.  Alex Caballero relieved him in the eighth but surrendered a base hit to Nick Hill to break up the no-no bid.

Kain and Matt Tietz added to runs in the second inning with a single and double before Carter and Schwanburg smacked back-to-back home runs to start off the third, making it 7-0.

A two-run home run from Matt Tietz led to a four-run fourth inning and Carter added to his RBI total with a RBI single in the fifth, keying another four-run frame.  Lynn led 15-0 after five innings.

A second two-run blast from Tietz brought the score to 17-0 but the shutout would end in the eighth when an inning-ending ground ball was misplayed.  A bases loaded walk took hold next but the inning was kept under control with a strikeout to Andrew Don.

Caballero struck out two in two innings, allowing two hits with two walks.

Kain was 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI, Tietz, 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs, DeBellis 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI and Kyle Schindler 3-for-4 with two RBI.

The Fighting Knights have a busy week ahead with six games in six days beginning on Monday, March 16, at 3 p.m. when they host Caldwell.  Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
