Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – John Borup drove in three runs over the first two innings while the 16th-ranked baseball team scored five times overall, helping Lynn University to a 10-6 victory over Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Knights top-five hitters combined to go 11-for-22 with five runs batted in and eight runs scored.
Borup heated up immediately and got the Blue & White bats going with a RBI double in the opening frame, scoring Michael Stemle (2-for-5, SB). A passed ball a batter later and Lynn led 2-0.
It was Borup again who added to the Fighting Knights total in the second inning, smacking a two-out, two-run single into the gap in left center field, bringing Stemle and Eric Schindler around to score. Thomas Kain (2-for-5, RBI) then collected his seventh double of the year, giving the home team a 5-0 advantage.
Bill Mendek (2-1) allowed only two hits with two strikeouts in three innings before giving way to AJ Falletta in the fourth. Falletta cruised through the fourth but allowed four runs on five hits in the fifth as the Owls (8-7) made it a one-run game.
Schindler would drive in two more runs on ground balls in the infield as Lynn slowly built back its lead. In the meantime, Jonathon Eisdorfer shut down SCSU's bats, allowing one hit over three plus innings until the ninth.
Matt Ackerman (2-for-4, 2 RBI) drove in two as part of a three-run seventh and Matt Tietz capped off Lynn's scoring with a RBI single in the eighth, bringing the score to 10-4.
A leadoff error, wild pitch and a single from Alex Wichmann plated another run for Southern Connecticut State and a second gaffe brought home the sixth run of the game but Eisdorfer weathered both plays to induce a weak ground out from Matt Burns to earn his first career save.
The Fighting Knights are back in action on Wednesday, March 18, at 2 p.m. when they host New Haven. Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
