Box Score 2 Miami Shores, Fla. – A little more than 12 hours after scoring only one run at Barry, Lynn University's 16th-ranked baseball team piled on 25 runs on 34 hits to sweep its double-header 16-10 and 9-1 on Saturday afternoon. Every starter reached base and scored at least one run to help the Fighting Knights improve to 22-6 overall and 6-3 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Two second-inning errors allowed Lynn to grab a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game one. The first came off a dropped fly ball while the second was a ground ball to first base. Both gaffe's plated runs and Matt Ackerman added the final run of the frame with a base hit to the gap in left center.
The offensive floodgates opened in the fifth when the Fighting Knights tallied six runs on six hits A bases loaded two run single from Matt Tietz started the run, followed by a RBI base hit from Alex DeBellis, RBI ground out by Ben Schwanburg and ended with a two-run single from Kyle Schindler.
Barry countered with back-to-back home runs in the home half of the fifth and kept things interesting with five runs in the sixth to chase starter Kyle Carter from the game. Making his first start of the year, Carter struck out four, walked one and allowed seven runs, six earned, on six hits.
Schindler gave the Fighting Knights a little cushion with a RBI single but it was John Borup who put the game out of reach with a two-out grand slam. Borup's feat was all the more amazing considering he was hit by a pitch in the head an inning earlier.
Ackerman put the exclamation point on the day with a two-run double in the eighth, giving Lynn the 16-10 advantage.
Jimmy O'Neill earned his first career save after tossing the final three innings of the game. He allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Travis Connolly was given a one-run lead before ever taking the mound in the second game with Carter driving home Borup with a double off the right field wall. Kyle Schindler later added to the lead with an infield single to bring home Schwanburg.
Connolly was downright nasty on the bump, pitching six scoreless innings with three Ks before allowing two hits and a run in the seventh. He improves to 4-1 on the year.
Lynn brought the thunder in the fourth and sixth innings as Matt Tietz launched his team-best fifth home run of the year and Alex DeBellis followed with a two-run blast 400 feet to left center field.
Kyle Schindler closed out the double-header sweep by striking out the side in the eighth and inducing a game-ending double-play in the ninth.
Borup went 5-for-10 with four runs scored and four RBI in the DH while Ackerman was 4-for-9 with three runs and three RBI and Debellis 5-for-10 with three runs and three RBI.
