Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. – The first two games of the series took just over 24 hours to complete as Lynn University's 19th-ranked baseball team split the Saturday doubleheader with an 11-5 loss in game one and 14-8 victory in game two against No. 3 Nova Southeastern. The Fighting Knights belted five home runs in the second contest to move to 24-7 overall and 7-4 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Game one started on Friday afternoon but rain forced the game to be continued with Lynn trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Thomas Kain smacked a solo home run in the first but NSU (25-5, 7-1 SSC) grabbed the lead in the second inning before the elements postponed action.
The Blue & White added three runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a pair of errors, to move ahead but the Sharks recaptured the lead with a five run third inning. Three more runs in the fifth put Nova Southeastern ahead 11-4 until Lynn scored one in the seventh.
Kyle Carter went 3-for-5 in the game with two runs, Alex DeBellis 2-for-4 and Ben Schwanburg 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
NSU's offense took hold of the second game, with Justin Garcia hitting a three-run home run in the top of the first but the Fighting Knights responded with the first of five jacks as Kyle Carter drove home two with a blast to right field. Matt Tietz then knotted the game 3-3 with a RBI double off the chalk on the right field line.
Lynn's offence began to click in the second with a six-run frame. John Borup singled home Kyle Schindler and then two NSU errors helped Lynn bring another run before Alex DeBellis launched a three-run, opposite field home run, giving the Fighting Knights a 9-3 lead.
Nova Southeastern did not relent, scoring two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth off three Lynn errors but the Blue & White smacked solo home runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames to pad its lead. Borup led off the fourth with a shot to left center field, Sam Sampen kept a home run inside the left field foul pole and Kain belted a ball into left center in the sixth.
The Schindler brothers put the game away with two runs in the eighth. Eric Schindler brought home one with a RBI groundout and Kyle Schindler ripped his second triple of the season to bring home Donovan Christman.
Travis Connolly earned his fifth victory of the year, tossing five innings with nine hits, five runs, four earned, four walks and six strikeouts. Kyle Carter pitched one error-filled inning and Bill Mendek shut down the potent NSU offense with three hitless shutout fames and three Ks for his sixth save.
Lynn's two-through-five hitters combined to go 11-for-21 with four home runs, nine RBI and 10 runs scored. Borup and Debellis each logged three hits.
