Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – John Cody Borup could not be stopped and neither could his teammates as Lynn University's 19th-ranked baseball team won the rubber match against No. 3 Nova Southeastern 9-6 Sunday afternoon and took two-of-three in the series. Borup went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in and hit .615 in the series while slugging 1.250 versus the Sharks. The Fighting Knights improve to 25-7 overall and 8-4 in the vaunted Sunshine State Conference.
A junior out of Orlando, Fla., John Borup set the Blue & White on an incredible offensive trajectory with a solo home run off starter Alex Mateo in the bottom of the first inning. Lynn hit three more home runs on the day and has amassed nine in the last three games.
Max Watt earned a start on the bump for the second time in three days. His first outing did not go as planned after rain shortened his start to two innings of work. Watt came to pitch in his second appearance against Nova Southeastern (25-6, 7-2 SSC) tossing 4.2 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
The Sharks would not let Lynn pull away, countering every Blue & White run with a score of their own. They responded with a run in the second to tie the game at 1-1.
Ben Schwanburg increased the Fighting Knights lead to 3-1 in the fourth following a towering two-run home run to right field. But NSU answered with a bases loaded walk in the fifth, chasing Watt from the game. AJ Falletta entered and teammate Thomas Kain made a diving stop on a Casey Gibson ground ball to strand three runners on base.
Borup started the fifth with a double down the left field line and scored when reliever Josh Glick sent a pitch to the backstop. Matt Tietz increased Lynn's advantage to 5-2 with a great single through the right side off a hit and run.
NSU used a two-run home run from Alexander Fernandez to close the gap to 5-4 only to watch as an error helped Albert Lefran score from first on a ground ball single to third base. Borup then drove home Matt Ackerman to put Lynn ahead 7-4.
Roche Woodard brought Nova Southeastern back again with a two-out, two-run double. But the Fighting Knights used the long ball to crush the Sharks. Kyle Carter led off the bottom of the seventh and smashed a solo home run, his fourth of the season, into the trees in right center field. Carter was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to secure the 9-6 victory.
Bill Mendek also threw on short rest, tossing four innings a day after pitching three innings. The senior All-American earned his seventh save of the year and 14th of his career, moving him into third place all-time at Lynn.
The Fighting Knights are back in action on short rest when they travel to Saint Leo, Fla., to take on nationally-ranked Saint Leo for a three-game series beginning Thursday, April 2, at 6 p.m. Both teams battle on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
