Box Score Saint Leo, Fla. – Lynn University's 13th-ranked baseball team turned the tables against the top offensive squad in the conference, knocking-off No. 15 Saint Leo 13-1 in the opener of the three-game series on Thursday night. The Fighting Knights belted four home runs, including a grand slam and three-run jack from Albert Lefran, while Kyle Carter earned the victory on the mound and helped out his own cause with a solo home run at the plate to improve his team's record to 26-7 overall and 9-4 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The Fighting Knights looked as though they would strike first in the opening frame after reigning SSC Player of the Week John Borup smacked a double into the gap but the junior outfielder was stranded on second base.
It was the Lions who then took the lead in the home half of the inning when Alex Mata drove Nick Perez home with a sacrifice fly. Saint Leo (27-7, 8-5 SSC) entered the game first in the league home runs (41) and RBI (265) and second in runs scored (295). Carter (3-0) settled down and posted zeros on the Saint Leo scoreboard over the next five frames. He allowed only three hits with no walks and three strikeouts in his second start of the season.
Eric Schindler knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the second with a bases loaded fielder's choice but it was Lefran who opened up the offense with a three-run jack to left field, putting the Blue & White ahead 4-1.
Schindler then added to Lynn's advantage with a two-out single through the left side of the infield before Carter gave his bullpen more cushion with a solo home run to right center field to open the seventh.
Less than a week after setting down Nova Southeastern with six strikeouts in three innings, Jonathon Wake was equally impressive against the Lions. The freshman hurler tossed three scoreless frames, allowing three hits with two strikeouts to earn his first career save.
Thomas B. Southard Stadium became a launching pad in the top of the ninth when the Blue & White put seven on the scoreboard on two hits. A bases loaded hit by pitch to Ben Schwanburg plated the first run of the ninth until Lefran launched a grand slam to right center field. Tensions proved high after Matt Ackerman was hit on the next pitch but Borup cleared the air for Lynn with a two-run shot to left field.
Five players had multi-hit games with Matt Tietz leading the way at 3-for-5. Lefran logged seven RBI with Borup and Schindler driving in two apiece.
