Box Score West Palm Beach, Fla.- Lynn University's baseball team (32-12-1) defeated Palm Beach Atlantic (22-22), 8-2, on Wednesday night. Kyle Carter went 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs batted in, three of which came from a three-run home run off the batter's eye in centerfield in the fifth inning. Bill Mendek (3-3) pitched seven innings allowing two runs, both unearned, while striking out two Sailfish in his second start of the season.
The Fighting Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Carter singled through the left side scoring Matt Ackerman from third base. A solo home run by Lynn's shortstop Matt Tietz an inning later gave the Blue & White a 2-0 cushion.
Ben Schwanburg hit a one-out double off the fence in left centerfield in the top of the fourth. Michael Stemle came to the plate and smashed his second home run of the season to put the Fighting Knights ahead 4-0. Palm Beach Atlantic answered in the bottom half of the inning when Andres Vazquez and Brian Walker hit back-to-back singles. Peter Rivera flew out to center field but both runners tagged and advanced to put two Sailfish in scoring position. Jason Webb reached on a throwing error by Lynn's third baseman which scored a pair of PBA runs cutting Lynn's lead to two.
However, Lynn didn't falter. John Borup led off the fifth with a double down the left field line and a single by Thomas Kain put runners on the corners for the Fighting Knights. Carter stepped to the plate and drove in three runs with a home run to dead center field for a 7-2 advantage.
In the top of the sixth inning Ackerman scored on a wild pitch for the Blue & White's eighth run of the game.
Jonathan Wake relieved Mendek in the eighth inning with a six-run lead. The freshman reliever struck out four batters in his first inning of work. The leadoff man Pat Kane struck out but reached on a wild pitch putting one runner for the Sailfish. After a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth followed by a walk, Wake set Julian Bilodeau down on strikes for his fifth strikeout. PBA's Jorge Bravo grounded into a double play to end the game a batter later.
Wake struck out five Sailfish in two innings allowing just one hit and a walk. At the plate Ackerman and Thomas Kain both went 2-for-5 with runs scored. Borup and Tietz both collected multi-hit games as well while eighth different Knights tallied hits as the team combined for 14 hits. PBA's Brian Walker went 4-for-4 to lead the Sailfish as they tallied two unearned runs on seven hits as a team.
Mendek earned his third win of the season on the mound while Palm Beach Atlantic's Kennie Silvestri fell to 2-2 on the season throwing four and a third innings allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts.
Lynn returns to action for the final Sunshine State Conference series of the season on May 4-5 when the Fighting Knights host Florida Southern.
