Box Score 2 Saint Leo, Fla. – A sweep looked in the cards but Lynn University's 13th-ranked baseball team had to settled for a series victory instead after splitting Saturday's doubleheader with an 11-7 victory and 9-7 loss to No. 15 Saint Leo on Friday. Kyle Carter went 5-for-8 with three runs scored, a home run and RBI and Eric Schindler drove in five runs. The Fighting Knights move to 27-8 overall and 10-5 in the Sunshine State Conference.
This is the second consecutive week Lynn has taken two of three from a nationally-ranked opponent after topping previously third-ranked Nova Southeastern last Saturday and Sunday.
A night after pouring on seven runs in the ninth, the Blue & White kept some in the tank with five runs to open the first inning of game one. Matt Ackerman smacked the first of four hits with a double and cross home plate following John Borup's single up the middle.
Alex DeBellis drove home two more with a two-run double into the left center field gap while Michael Stemle and Eric Schindler continued the barrage with run-scoring plays.
Saint Leo (27-8, 8-6 SSC) closed the gap to three, 5-2, in the home half of the inning until Matt Tietz increased Lynn's advantage to 6-2 with a RBI fielder's choice. Two more runs by the Lions chased starter Travis Connolly from the game and made it a one-run game in the fourth.
An error by the Lions helped the Fighting Knights with their seventh run but it was a two-run single from Schindler in the seventh that put the game away, making it 9-4. Saint Leo collected two more runs in the eighth only to have Thomas Kain rip a two-out, two-run double inside the third base line.
Carter would reach base in all five plate appearances, getting hit by two pitches and going 3-for-3 at the plate. Ackerman was 4-for-6 and two runs, Borup 3-for-6 and Schindler 3-for-5.
Connolly allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and four K's in 4.1 innings before being replaced by Mendek. The All-American closer allowed three runs on five hits with a strikeout in 4.2 frames, collecting his third win on the mound.
Game two continued Lynn's offensive dominance early. The Fighting Knights plated two in the first off a DeBellis double and added a solo home run from Carter in the third, a two-run double from Borup in the fourth and a two-run home run by Schindler in the fifth.
Saint Leo found hope in the sixth and seven innings when a busted up double-play and a pair of errors led to five unearned runs. The Lions then scored the winning runs in the eighth to pull ahead 9-7.
Lynn is back in action when they travel to battle the University of Tampa in a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 10, at 6 p.m. Fans can catch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
