Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. – A two-run walk-off home run by Thomas Kain in game one and an eighth-inning RBI single from Alex DeBellis in game two propelled Lynn University's 13th-ranked baseball to an 8-7, 7-6 doubleheader sweep over Florida Southern on Wednesday afternoon. Kain finished the doubleheader 5-for-10 with two home runs, three runs scored and five runs batted in while DeBellis was 5-for-9 with a home run and four RBI. Bill Mendek factored in decisions in both games with a victory and save to help the Fighting Knights improve to 34-13-1 overall and 14-9-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.
Game one saw a combined eight home runs leave the park as all 15 runs came from the long-ball. The Moccasins (22-23, 10-14 SSC) smacked a solo home run in the fourth and again in the fifth before Jhalan Jackson launched a three-run shot in the fifth to give FSC a 5-0 lead.
The Blue & White bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth as Ben Schwanburg opened the frame with a solo home run over the scoreboard in right field. Then with two outs and runners on first and second, Kain belted a three-run shot just over the glove of Jackson in right field to cut Lynn's deficit to 5-4.
Kyle Carter kept the inning alive with an opposite field single bringing DeBellis to the plate. The senior catcher stepped out of the dugout late but got all of the first pitch from Craig Savage to put the Fighting Knights ahead 6-5.
Mendek (5-2) entered the game having pitched brilliantly in his previous appearance but surrendered a two-run home run to Jackson, his second of the game, as Florida Southern regained the lead. He ran into trouble again in the ninth but struck out Jason Sierra to end the threat.
The Mocs put in their closer Casey Eskew in the ninth in an attempt to take the series but John Borup kept the inning alive with a sharp single to center field. Kain stepped to the plate and ripped the first pitch he saw from Eskew to the deepest part of the park to end the game 8-7 in Lynn's favor.
The Fighting Knights held a late lead against FSC again in the second contest, up 6-2 in the eighth. But Jackson cut the deficit to three with a sacrifice fly and Sierra smacked a three-run shot to even up the game.
Lynn placed runners on first and second with two outs and DeBellis at the plate. The senior catcher knocked a seeing-eye single through the left side and pinch runner AJ Falletta beat the throw home from Florida Southern's left fielder to score the game-winner.
The Mocs continued their trend of scoring off home runs by tying the game in the fourth from a Shawn Sanders after DeBellis put Lynn ahead 1-0 in the first with a RBI single. The Blue & White went ahead 4-1 after six innings following RBI doubles from Michael Stemle and Matt Ackerman and a fielding error from FSC.
Sierra drove in Florida Southern's only non-home run, run with a RBI single but Ben Schwanburg answered back with a towering two-run home run to right center field, his second of the day and seventh of the season.
Overlooked in the offensive display was starter Max Watt's effort on the mound. The junior right-hander allowed two runs on six hits over 6.1 innings while fanning eight batters. He now has 82 strikeouts in 64.2 innings pitched this season.
Kyle Schindler entered in relief and struck out two batters with the bases loaded before being replaced by Jonathon Wake. Bill Mendek then pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save of the season.
Lynn moved up to fifth in the most recent NCAA Regional rankings and is poised for consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in program history.
