Panthers Pack Heavy Offense, Take Two from Lynn Baseball

BOCA RATON, Fla. – After inclement weather forced Thursday's Sunshine State Conference series opener to be completed on Friday morning, the Lynn University baseball team dropped two contests to Florida Tech. The Panthers claimed the opener 13-1 before taking the nightcap 20-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game 1

  • The Panthers struck in the opening frame when right fielder Daniel Spzik hit a two-run homer.
  • Lynn starting pitcher Frank Grandinette gave the Fighting Knights their lone run of the contest with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first.
  • Florida Tech erupted for five runs in the second inning to take a 7-1 lead.
  • A six-run Panther sixth was the final scoring frame of the day.
  • Rain forced the two teams to resume Thursday's game on Friday morning in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Grandinette turned in an uncharacteristic outing on the mound, surrendering 11 runs through 5.2 frames.
  • Alex Caballero, Mike McFerran, and Jordan Lindsay combined to toss the final 3.1 chapters without allowing an earned run.
  • Panther starter Ty Cohen hurled six innings on the hill, scattering five hits and giving up just one run.

Game 2

  • Ryan Donovan and Miguel Ceballos homered in the second and third respectively to give Lynn a 2-0 lead.
  • The fourth inning got away from the Fighting Knights, as 11 Panther runs came in to score.
  • John Silviano left the yard for the 12th time this season in the fourth with a solo shot to center.
  • Florida Tech combined to score nine runs after the fifth inning.
  • Grandinette hit a ball off the face of the scoreboard in the home sixth, and John Borup hit Lynn's fifth solo home run of the game an inning later.
  • Lynn right-hander Donovan Armas was perfect through three innings but was chased in the middle of Florida Tech's big fourth.
  • Jonathon Wake provided the Fighting Knights with four innings, while Ryan Caporice and Ben Fagan tossed the final two.
  • Tyler Deel lasted four innings for the Panthers, but Rhett Willis earned the win after five stanzas of relief work.

 

STATS FROM THE GAME:

  • Donovan, Grandinette, and Borup each had three hits through the first two games of the series.
  • Grandinette is the only Fighting Knight to drive in more than one run against Florida Tech so far.
  • Five Florida Tech hitters posted a multi-hit game in the opener.
  • Panther third baseman Reid Neal went 4-for-11 at the plate, scoring six runs and driving in four more.
 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Grandinette and Armas each suffered their first loss of the season on Friday.
  • The Fighting Knights have now posted 10 or more hits in 17 of their last 20 contests.
  • With Borup's seventh-inning home run, the Blue and White now have hit 54 this spring, surpassing their total from last season (51 games).
