Silviano Breaks School Home Run Record as Lynn Baseball Splits Twin Bill

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Lynn University baseball team dropped the opener of a doubleheader against Eckerd by a final of 10-8 before taking the nightcap 17-5. John Silviano homered twice in Saturday's first game to set the new program record for long balls in a season with 22 before adding one more in the series finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED:         

Game 1 

  • Eckerd hit the scoreboard first, taking a 3-0 lead in the opening frame behind a pair of Lynn errors.
  • Miguel Ceballos tripled in a run in the top of the second, and Kyle Schindler singled him in three batters later.
  • The home nine extended the lead to 4-2 when first baseman Justin Glover doubled down the left field line in the third inning.
  • Silviano left the yard for the second time in the series to open the Lynn fifth and tie the single season school record.
  • After Eric Schindler was hit by a pitch, Tyler Curtis hit his second dinger in as many days to put Lynn up 5-4.
  • The lead was short-lived, as the Tritons scratched across two in their half of the fifth inning to regain a 6-5 edge.
  • Ryan Donovan and Curtis each drove in a run for the Blue and White in the top of the eighth to again go on top by a run.
  • Nick Conti homered to straightaway center in the home half to tie the game and ultimately force extra innings.
  • Silviano turned on a pitch in the tenth to tally his 22nd long ball of the year, surpassing Gabe McDougall for first place in a Lynn season.
  • After Carter Cashman and Zach Mitsmenn each drew walks in the bottom half, Conti hit an opposite-field walk-off home run to give Eckerd a 10-8 victory.

Game 2

  • Curtis opened the scoring in the first frame, plating Kyle Schindler from second base.
  • Jake O'Rourke homered in the bottom of the inning to pull even at 1-1.
  • Donovan deposited a three-run shot over the wall in right in the third to put Lynn back on top 4-1.
  • Eckerd got one run back in the home half, but the Fighting Knights posted their second consecutive three-run inning in the fourth.
  • Yet another big inning came two chapters later behind RBIs from Curtis and both Schindlers.
  • The Tritons managed three runs of their own following the stand-and-stretch to cut the deficit to 10-5.
  • The Blue and White erupted for seven in the eighth inning, with Silviano and Eric Schindler each clearing the fence.

 

STATS FROM THE GAMES:

  • Starter Jaret Vermillion gave the Fighting Knights six innings in the opener, allowing two earned runs while fanning five.
  • Four relievers combined for the final four stanzas, but Kyle Schindler took his first loss of the year.
  • Triton right hander Zach Hoppe earned the win in the 11-inning victory.
  • Silviano went 3-for-3 at the dish in the first game, while John Borup and Eric Schindler each posted four-hit affairs in the finale.
  • Curtis drove in seven runs for the day.
  • Donovan Armas pitched into the seventh of game two for the Fighting Knights, scattering seven hits en route to the victory.
  • Jordan Lindsay, Alex Caballero, Mike McFerran and Borup combined for an unblemished final 2.2 innings on the bump.
 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Silviano has hit more than one home run in six of Lynn's seven Sunshine State Conference series this season.
  • The Fighting Knights hit three dingers in each game this weekend and have now hit at least two long balls 25 times this spring.
