Lynn volleyball opens season with dominant straight-set victory

Davie, Fla. – In their long-awaited return to the court, the defending SSC champions wasted no time showing that they plan on picking up right where they left off in 2019, as they took down Stonehill College in straight sets.

STATS OF THE MATCH:

  • The Fighting Knights used a balanced attack to knock off the Skyhawks. Lauren Odom and Sonja Udovcic led the way with seven kills each, and Victoria Macaluso, Milica Kusmuk, and Morgan Browne were right behind them, each recording six kills.
  • Defensively, Browne and Macaluso led the way, each recording five block assists. Browne was also one of three Fighting Knights to record a solo block. The others were Odom and Kusmuk.
  • Udovcic and Ruth Zijlstra each recorded 14 digs, and Kusmuk continued her incredibly well-rounded game with 10 of her own. Zijlstra also led the way for Lynn in service aces, recording four of the teams' five.
  • As a team, the Fighting Knights attack percentage was 36.6%, with their most successful set being the third, when they converted on 40.6% of their attack attempts.
  • Odom led the team in attack percentage, converting on 50% of her 14 attack attempts.
  • Browne led the team with 9.5 points. Odom was close behind, finishing with nine.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Udovcic's seven kills bring her career total to 1219. This moves her past Theresa Daniels '05 and into second place in school history. She is just eight kills away from tying, and nine kills away from breaking, the school record set by Michele Newman '03.
  • The Fighting Knights opened the first set on a 12-2 run, and they ended the third set by winning 14 of the final 18 points of the game.
  • After recording two block assists, Odom now has 267 in her career and trails Haley Pratt by just 10 block assists for the most in program history. Odom has played 71 fewer sets than Pratt up to this point.
  • Continuing the trend of record chasing, Odom is also now just nine blocks (323) away from tying Claire Angelich's record for most total blocks in school history.

UP NEXT:
The Blue and White will see action twice tomorrow, as they continue playing at the 2021 Shark Invitational. They will open the day against Pittsburgh St. at 12:00 p.m. and close out the weekend with a matchup against Quincy at 3:00 p.m.
