LAKELAND, Fla. – The Lynn University women's tennis team sweeped the singles and doubles tournaments at the ITA South Regional Championships. The Fighting Knights were led by sophomore Salma Djoubri, who took home the singles championship, and the duo of graduate Deniza Marcinkevica and junior Greta Schieroni, who earned the doubles title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- No. 5 overall seed graduate Deniza Marcinkevica and junior Greta Schieroni earned a bye in the round of 64 and dominated the second round with an 8-1 victory over Delta State's Subias and Caride
- Lynn's duo earned another victory in the round of 16, defeating Embry-Riddle's Blanco and Cabero del Hierro (8-6)
- Marcinkevica and Schieroni advanced to the semifinals after defeating AUM's Garcia and Urbiola Armenta (8-5)
- The duo earned a spot in the finals with an 8-3 victory over Nova Southeastern's Weir and Benedejcic
- Marcinkevica and Scheieroni downed Espinal and Davies in two sets to earn the tournament victory (7-6, 6-4)
- Sophomores Kristin Younes and Salma Djoubri opened play in the round of 32, earning a dominant victory against Montevallo's Hartlohner and Podskubkova 8-1
- The sophomore pair earned its place in the quarterfinals after an 8-3 win over Florida Southern's Brown and Klaren
- Younes and Djoubri defeated Embry-Riddle's Ceusta and Issler (8-7) in the quarterfinals
- In the semifinals, the sophomores fell to Nova Southeastern's Espinal and Davies, 4-8
Singles:
- The No. 2 seed Djoubri overcame adversity in the second round (1-6, 7-5, 10-2) and cruised to a victory in the third round over Rollins' Liu (6-2, 6-4)
- The sophomore punched a ticket to the quarterfinals, defeating Nova Southeastern's Benedejcic (6-2, 6-2)
- Djoubri defeated Pasini in the quarterfinals (6-0, 6-2) and Versier (6-0, 6-2), earning a spot in the final
- The sophomore took care of business in the final, defeating Weir (6-2, 6-2), earning Lynn's second title of the tournament
- No. 4 Scheroni coasted to a pair of victories in the round of 64 (6-1, 6-2) and round of 32 (6-1, 6-2)
- The junior fell in the round of 16, dropping the first two sets to Versier (6-7, 4-6)
- No. 5 seed Younes opened play in the round of 64 with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory against Palm Beach Atlantic's Williams
- The sophomore won a nail-biter in the round of 32 against Valdosta State's Pezo [6-7, 6-2, 10-4], earning a spot in the round of 16
- Younes dropped the round of 16 matchup to Weir (5-7, 4-6)
- No. 9 seed Marcinkevica had a bye in the opening round and won the round of 64 matchup in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 10-7)
- The graduate dominated the round of 32 against West Alabama's Takanashi (6-1, 6-4), earning a spot in the round of 16
- Marcinkevica cruised to a victory against Blanco (7-6, 6-0), but fell in the quarterfinal to No. 1 seed Espinal (0-6, 3-6)
