Softball Stays Perfect at Saint Leo Tournament

Saint Leo, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team continued play at the Saint Leo Tournament on Saturday with a doubleheader, winning both games to extend its current win streak to four. With the sweep, Lynn improves to 6-4 overall.

Christina Carvatta paced the offense with four hits on the day, being the only Fighting Knight with multiple hits in both games. Sara Vazquez and Manya Lopez collected three hits. Lopez, Vazquez and Kaci Vassallo all logged two RBI for the day.

In the circle, the entire Blue & White rotation saw time on the field, highlighted by Katelyn Key throwing the first one-hitter of the season. Francais Olexa also earned a win while Missy Montgomery finished the final inning of the day to record a save.

The Fighting Knights never trailed in either contest, scoring runs in the opening inning of both games.

Versus McKendree (1-1), Lopez doubled through the right side to score Vassallo, who stole her first base of the season earlier in the frame. In the following stanza, Jasmine Campos scored on a throwing error with Christina Carvatta coming home off a sacrifice fly by Sara Vazquez in the following at bat.

For the second-straight inning, Lyn doubled its lead over McKendree , starting with a solo home run from Cherise McEnery. Another throwing error by the Bearcats brought Lopez from second base to home for Lynn's fifth run of the matinee match. Olexa ended the starting pitchers game with a single that brought Amanda Casillas home.

With help from McKendree, Lynn was able to end the game in five with the mercy rule. With two outs in the fifth, Carvatta reached on a throwing error that scored Leanne Wright. In the following at bat, Vazquez singled to second base bringing Casillas around the final base.

Key (1-1) threw her first one hitter with the Blue & White, throwing all five innings with three strikeouts.

Offensively, every Fighting Knight in the lineup recorded a hit, with Carvatta and Lopez both having two. Vazquez had a team-high two RBI with Lopez, McEnery and Olexa all chipping in.

In a rematch from yesterday, Lynn continued its offensive assault that scored 13 versus Lincoln Memorial with two runs in the first frame. The Fighting Knights got on the scoreboard first off a throwing error by the catcher, scoring Vazquez. Two batters later, Lopez singled to the shortstop to score teammate Vassallo. Vassallo added to the lead in the lead with a sacrifice fly to center field which brought Olexa home from third base.

Lincoln Memorial (5-4) made it a one run contest in the sixth with a two run home run off a pitch from Olexa. The Railsplitters knotted the score at 3-3 later in the stanza with a single up the middle. The Fighting Knights quickly responded in the following at bat. Carvatta began the inning with a single, advancing to second on a bunt from Vazquez. Vassallo brought the go-ahead runner home with a single up the middle.

Olexa (2-2) threw six innings surrendering three runs, only one earned. Montgomery came in to pitch the final inning to earn her first save of the season.

Vazquez and Carvatta combined for half of Lynn's total hits with two apiece. Vassallo had two RBI while Lopez provided one.

With the conclusion of today's games, both Vassallo and Vazquez have six-game hitting streaks going.
