Box Score 2 Winter Garden, Fla. – A one-out suicide squeeze bunt from the least likeliest of sources led Lynn University's softball team to a split on Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Knights slipped by Maryville 5-4 before falling 9-2 to Truman State. Cherise McEnery drove in three runs on the day while Christina Carvatta added a team-high four hits. Lynn moves to 11-11 overall.
It was Carvatta who lit a fire under the Blue & White offense with her team trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh. The senior outfielder logged her third hit of the contest with a bunt single and watched as teammates Francais Olexa and Kaci Vassallo followed suit with bunt singles of their own. An errant throw to first off Vassallo's base knock allowed Carvatta to score, knotting the game at 4-4.
McEnery, one of Lynn's biggest thumpers, came to the plate with the winning run 60-feet away and laid down a perfectly placed bunt, which hugged the first base line, as Olexa rushed home plate on the suicide squeeze.
Missy Montgomery started in the circle for Lynn and was unfortunately on the wrong side of six errors, which led to a pair of unearned runs. She picked-up the no-decision after tossing five innings and allowing four hits, three runs and one earned run with one strikeout.
Three errors in the first frame helped Maryville (1-8) grab a 1-0 lead but Olexa tied things up in the home half with a double into the left center gap, scoring Sara Vazquez. Two more errors in the third helped the Saints take a 2-0 lead but once again the Fighting Knights answered, this time with two runs off a two-out, two-run single from Leanne Wright.
A home run by Nicoless Taylor in the fifth was the only mistake made by Montgomery before she was relieved by Katelyn Key in the sixth. Key earned her second win by allowing one run on three hits over two innings.
The top of Lynn's order went a combined 7-for-11 with five runs scored. Vazquez was 2-for-4 with two runs, Carvatta 3-for-4 with two runs and Olexa 2-for-3 and a run.
Lynn did not fare as well in game two, falling behind 2-0 after the opening frame. A two-run home run by McEnery in the top of the second tied the ballgame up but Truman (7-4) used a three-run home run to build a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the second.
The Bulldogs would add runs in the third and fourth innings to complete their 9-2 victory. Olexa collected the loss with seven runs on nine hits over two innings. Montgomery pitched solid in relief with three Ks and two runs on five hits in four innings.
Lynn is back in action for a three-game series at Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla., beginning on Friday, March 13, at 7 p.m. Fans can keep up with the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
