Baseball Wins in Exciting Fashion

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The victory could not have been written any better as Lynn University's 16th-ranked baseball team scored the winning run on a squeeze bunt in the eighth and ended the game with a strike'em out, throw'em out double-play to take down New Haven 5-4 on Wednesday.  Kyle Schindler drove in the winning run and pitched the final frame for his third save of the season and his twin brother Eric smacked a three-run home run.  The Fighting Knights have won eight straight to improve to 20-5 overall.

Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth, Ben Schwanburg put the winning-run on second base with a double off the left center field wall.  A gutsy bunt to the bag at third base from Eric Schindler had pinch runner AJ Falletta sliding in just underneath the tag while Kyle Schindler followed two batters later with a bunt hugging the chalk to give Lynn the 5-4 lead.

The game was far from over with New Haven (2-4) hitting in the ninth.  Ryan Carmona made an incredible diving play at third but his throw was just off the mark allowing Jack Zagaja to reach first.  Kyle Schindler got Nick Russo to fly out to center field for the first out but brought the count full on Alex Palmieri.

With brother throwing to brother, Palmieri swung and missed on a low off-speed pitch away and Eric was able to scoop and throw to Albert Lefran at second in time and end the game.

The Schindler brothers combined to go 4-for-7 with a run scored and four runs batted in.

Lynn grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the first when Alex DeBellis drove home John Borup with a double in to the right center gap.  Borup went 2-for-4 with a double and triple while DeBellis was 3-for-4.

The Chargers were able to score all four of their runs off home runs.  Zagaja hit the first with a two-run shot to left field in the second but Lynn responded with a three-run home run in the fourth from Eric Schindler.  New Haven then tied the game in the fifth with a two-run blast from Zach Collett.

Robert Guarnieri was solid again on the bump for the Fighting Knights.  The junior from Boca Raton, Fla., struck out a career-high seven batters with one walk in six innings but did surrender the four runs on five hits.

Jonathon Wake came on in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout and one hit before Schindler locked down the ninth.

Lynn returns to the diamond on Friday, March 20, at 6 p.m. when it begins a three-game Sunshine State Conference series at Barry in Miami Shores, Fla.  Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
