Lacrosse Engineers a Win over MIT

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Johnny Gavin and Austin Jerhoff combined for 14 points in Lynn University's 16-9 win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (6-2) on Wednesday night at Bobby Campbell Stadium. The Fighting Knights improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the Sunshine State Conference. Jerhoff and Anthony Rainone scored a game-best four goals each while two other members of the Blue & White squad had multi-goal games.

The Engineers scored first at the 13:41 mark when Graham Davis made his way past Lynn's goalkeeper, Taylor Ferrino, for a 1-0 MIT lead. The Fighting Knights responded with back-to-back goals from Rainone and Gavin to give Lynn a 2-1 advantage by the seven minute mark. Austin Shircliff scored the first goal of his young career at 3:59 to extend the Knights' lead to 3-1 and Jerhoff found the back of the goal at 2:18 on a pass from Gavin for the Blue & White to lead 4-1 at the end of the quarter.

Rainone scored twice in the opening five and a half minutes of the second quarter to put Lynn ahead 6-1. MIT would not go down without a fight scoring three unanswered goals over the final six minutes of the half to make it a 6-4 game at the break.

Lynn came out hot after halftime to score five-straight goals to open the spread to seven goals. Tyler Janvrin notched his only goal of the game at 13:07 and 14 seconds later Gavin scored off a face off on an assist by Caleb Cerf. Mark Snellman and Jerhoff scored a minute apart for a 10-4 Fighting Knights lead bt the 8:43 mark. The Blue & White won the next faceoff as Shircliff went to goal three seconds later and scored unassisted for his second point of the game, marking his first career multi-goal game at 8:40.

Luke Verdi scored unassisted goals for the Engineers three minutes apart to bring the game within five, 11-6, but a goal by Rainone on an assist by Tyler Briggs with 46 seconds left in the third quarter made it a 12-6 game with 15 minutes to play.

Jerhoff put his third goal in the net 13 seconds into the fourth quarter on an assist by Gavin but MIT responded minutes later on a goal by Paul Orrson. Gavin tallied his third goal of the game with 9:38 left in regulation for a 14-7 Fighting Knights lead. Jerhoff scored at 5:59 and 50 seconds later Brian Kiel put in the Blue & White's 16th goal of the game. MIT tacked on a pair of goals in the final minutes but it wasn't enough as Lynn cruised to its seventh victory of the season.

Gavin's hat trick and four assists come as his career-high for points in a game while Jerhoff's four goals and three apples also mark his career-high seven points in a game. Rainone's four goals mark his ninth hat trick in as many games of his career.

Ferrino made 11 saves in goal for the Blue & White in his second win of the season and third of his career and picked up 10 groundballs to match the game-high. Vincent Genovesi was dominant at the face off spot winning 21-of-26 battles at the X and grabbing 10 ground balls. The Fighting Knights were successful on all 18 attempted clears tonight and caused a total of eight turnovers by the Engineers.

Graham Davis had a team-best three goals for MIT with one assist. Eric Bartell made ten saves in goal for the Engineers and had a team-high 10 ground balls.
